Trivia
The Butlins Resort is situated near Bognor Regis, West Sussex, on the ancient south coast of England.
According to Wikipedia, "Bognor is one of the oldest recorded Saxon place names in Sussex. In a document of 680 AD it is referred to as Bucgan ora meaning Bucge's (a female Saxon name) shore, or landing place."
The town was originally named just "Bognor", and was a fishing (and reputedly also a smuggling) village until the 18th century. The area was chosen for King George V to convalesce in after illness during 1929, whereupon the King bestowed the royal Regis suffix.
The town centre is largely pedestrianised and is currently the subject of consultations with regard to a major development, tentatively planned for the next four or five years.
Butlins
Sir Billy Butlin opened one of his Butlin's Holiday Camps in Bognor in 1960. The camp later became known as Southcoast World until 1998 and is now known as Butlin's Bognor Regis Resort. In 2004 Butlin's erected a large indoor leisure park, the building's construction sharing certain aspects with the Millennium Dome in London. In 2005, a new £10m hotel, called "The Shoreline" was unveiled.
